heaven

A lot of people say that Penland School of Crafts is heaven on earth, and I’d have to agree. Lucy Morgan started Penland 1920, and today they offer eight-week sessions called Concentrations, short summer classes, a work-study scholarship program, a core student program, and resident artist programs. My senior year of college I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship from UNC to attend a summer session and I took a course called Sculptural Fibers. These photos are from an album I put together after my trip.

It’s kind of hard to describe Penland in a few sentences – but basically it is an arts and crafts school in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina where workshops are offered in books and paper, clay, drawing and painting, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking and letterpress, textiles, wood, and other media. Most students stay in dorm-like buildings, and the all-organic food is amazing. My cell phone didn’t work (hallelujah!) and there might just be one or two computers with internet access to share among the students – I don’t know, I didn’t have a desire to check! If you’re visiting western NC, Penland makes a great day trip and of course there is no such thing as a ‘bad’ class to take.

These photos are of an amazing wall that ceramic students built.

Stay tuned – I’ll have the second half of these photos tomorrow! In the meantime you can see & read more on Penland’s website.
