my downtown

We’ve made it to Salt Lake City and are having fun exploring downtown before the first session starts later this afternoon. The mountains surrounding the city are beautiful, and it’s not even that cold. Today I’ve got a guest post on the blog Reading My Tea Leaves about my own downtown (Durham, NC).

Most people who participate in Erin’s “My Downtown” series share beautiful details, like great typography or cool doors. But once I started photographing downtown Durham, I realized that it’s the buildings that really make it special. Since textile and tobacco manufacturing (Bull Durham Tobacco) were big in Durham, we’ve got all these old factories, many of which have been turned into lofts, artist studios, and commercial space after being empty for a long time. When the factories started to close, Durham declined, and although we’ve seen a lot of growth in the past ten years downtown Durham sometimes feels like a ghost town still. But I’ve been there for almost 5 years, and it’s amazing how many bars, restaurants, and shops have opened in that time. It’s exciting to watch a town change before your eyes, and everyone who lives here has a fierce sense of pride to be a Durhamite! Such great history & culture! You can read more about the history here, and see my photos here. Thanks for having me, Erin!

  4. If you have a chance while in Salt Lake, you should visit One World Cafe (http://www.oneworldeverybodyeats.com/). I ate there a few years ago and it was such a wonderful experience!

  5. Hi Raru, If you aren’t already, try using the latest version of Firefox. I’ve been having trouble with Internet Explorer & images on my blog lately…
