house dreaming

February 24th, 2010 · 11 Comments

I’ve been slowly assembling some interiors photos in a “house inspiration” set on flickr, and thought I’d share them here, too! The common theme seems to be lots and lots of natural light, the one thing our rental lacks after about 11am. In the photos above I love the neutral tones, lots of wood, and the artwork. The whole interior of our house is painted beige with white trim, so I’m also very drawn to white walls lately. The grass is always greener, right?

I like this photo because it reminds me that dark colors aren’t all bad! I would never be brave enough to paint my ceiling black, but I love the artwork in this room and that table combined with those chairs, and that floor lamp… I would love to work from that room!

Now we’re getting more realistic! The style of these rooms is more what my husband and I gravitate toward, and I like the eclectic, vintage vibe, splashes of color (balanced with white walls of course), and casual feel of these rooms. I loved Juliet Totten’s house from Design Sponge.

This one is so attainable, clean, minimal, and whenever I look at it I think, “we could do that.” Well, there may not be consensus on the xoxo. But I love that dresser, the bedspread, the openness.

That room on the left just kills me. My husband would go crazy with all that white and girlieness but it looks so peaceful! I grabbed the photo on the right because of the big plant and pale blue walls. If I could keep my plants alive, I’d have them all over the place. If only succulents came in a giant size.

  1. Love that you’ve started a flickr, that’s so genius! I find myself tucking away all these links and images, but it’s so hard to flip through — but ooh, an online album, I like. Love what you’ve got, and I agree re: braveness on dark — I wish I had that gumption!

  2. Finally, unstage-y homes. There’s a ton of great ideas here – esp. if you’re just setting up house or have a lot of great older pieces. A quick note for everyone. With the exception of the XOXO (that’s just fun), pay attention to these examples’ picture height – so good. Art works SO much better when you let it be in the room. My rule of thumb is to hang central pieces at eye level. 6-7″ above tables and couches. Live with your art.

  3. agreed! genius (you) using flickr for house inspiration folder. silly (me) I keep faving on flickr, not thinking to use in this way. Love the inspiration you’ve chosen.

  4. Thanks for featuring my bedroom! I’m glad Phil doesn’t mind the XOXO. I hung it really high on the wall, which is definitely not something I would normally do, but I liked the drama and the open feeling it created.

  5. Mandi! So glad to know where this came from. Thanks for commenting!

  6. I’m loving all these images! Our house was weird rental beige-y white when we bought it and I had painted a dramatic color on an accent wall in the living room when we moved in, but I am wanting to paint it back to a clean fresh white. Especially now that we got rid of the carpet and restored the hardwood floors. I think my husband would kill me for wanting to repaint already, but I can’t help it! Thanks for the inspiration!

  7. I have many of these bookmarked at well! The light colors are sure to help open up the mind and inspire creativity!
    Good Luck!

  8. I love the dramatic black ceiling. Fantastic paired with the white eames chairs and light wood!

    Gorgeous eye candy, bookmarking now!

  9. Such a great set of inspiration shots and I can easily imagine how you would take elements from each and make them all work together. Hoping you’ll share some results with us too!!

  10. found your blog today — i’m in raleigh!

    i’ll be checking back in!

  11. This is an amazing place for living. Every picture looks so feminine, stylish and elegant. To find nice pictures of interiors is easy, but only few of them are so much inspiring and have the something special. The way to combine colours, furniture and all small decorative accessories can help every room in our houses or flats to look more interesting and modern. You have chosen different styles, so everybody can find an inspiration for his taste and style. Thank you for inspiration.

    Best regards,
    Julie
