smockshop

February 9th, 2010 · 10 Comments

I love the Smockshop project, started by artist Andrea Zittel. From the site:

The smockshop is an artist run enterprise that generates income for artists whose work is either non-commercial, or not yet self sustaining. A smock is a simple double wrap around garment designed by Andrea Zittel—then sewn by artists who reinterpret the original design. As an active testament to Zittel’s principlethat “rules make us more creative”, each resulting smock is completely unique and one of a kind.

If you sew, this site would be an enormous place for inspiration (I’d think) as there are hundreds of creative dresses to look through! And there’s a PDF pattern for you to download.

  2. Wow these are soo beautiful! I am going to download the template right now! I just got in to sewing and would love to try and make these!!

  3. Love this! You’re right…it’s great inspiration.

  4. These are lovely. I don’t normally like smocks as I have boobs and the style tends to make you look fat but the black and tartan one and the teal blue one would actually look great on curvy girls!

  5. i like thinking about the artists creative process when bound by a set of rules – in this case the template – it makes me particularly curious about why they made the decisions they did in the face of constraint – great post!

  6. I cant pick a favorite!!!

  7. I can’t pick a favorite either! These are incredibly simple and attractive!
