currently reading: What is the What: The Autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng by Dave Eggers

June 30th, 2010 · 6 Comments

From Publisher’s Weekly:

Separated from his family when Arab militia destroy his village, Valentino joins thousands of other ‘Lost Boys,’ beset by starvation, thirst and man-eating lions on their march to squalid refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya, where Valentino pieces together a new life. He eventually reaches America, but finds his quest for safety, community and fulfillment in many ways even more difficult there than in the camps: he recalls, for instance, being robbed, beaten and held captive in his Atlanta apartment. Eggers’s limpid prose gives Valentino an unaffected, compelling voice and makes his narrative by turns harrowing, funny, bleak and lyrical. The result is a horrific account of the Sudanese tragedy, but also an emblematic saga of modernity—of the search for home and self in a world of unending upheaval.

this week’s recipe: nectarine and pistachio crunch

June 29th, 2010 · 3 Comments

I’ve been enjoying fresh, local blueberries with cream and wanted to share that with you, but let’s face it: you don’t need a recipe for that. (Dump blueberries in bowl! Splash with cream!) If you’re more adventurous, this recipe for Nectarine and Pistachio Crunch from Sparkling Ink looks summery and delicious. Cinnamon, yogurt, honey, and custard… need I say more?

Heather in Elle Decor

June 28th, 2010 · 7 Comments

I’m so excited for my friend and previous client, Heather Garrett, whose shop was included in this month’s issue of Elle Decor in a “what’s hot! shops” feature. (All the other featured shops were in California and New York City I might add, so go Durham, North Carolina)!

But wait, look closer… (really close)… those are my photographs on the wall! The closest I’ll ever get to being in Elle Decor, folks! Ha!

Jokes aside, it’s a huge accomplishment for Heather, and I’m so proud for her & her team!

I didn’t find a spare moment for thrifting this weekend, but I did find the relatively new etsy shop Lackluster Co. Lots of pretty things there!
