rue magazine (+ hello tenfold)!

September 16th, 2010 · 11 Comments

Although everyone agrees that nothing can replace the glossies (I’ve already ordered a subscription to this new one), I do love the new online magazines. The latest is Rue Magazine, which went live today and is so good. While I’ve loved all the online magazines that have popped up this year, Rue is the first one that I’ve been printing and saving images from for my own “new-house” files. I mean can you believe how perfect Victoria’s home is? That woman has talent. And I love the behind-the-scenes look at Mae Mae Paperie.

I was thrilled when Anne approached me a little while ago to design some paper goods (above & below) for a party thrown by HGTV design star Emily Henderson in Issue 1. You can see them starting on page 162 of the magazine, can download printables and watch a behind-the-scenes video here.

Thanks for including me guys, and congratulations to Rue!

let me introduce you to… my dream house

September 15th, 2010 · 32 Comments

OK, so it needs a bit of work. And no, it’s not the one we’re buying. But you can see the potential oozing from it, I know you can. This  Durham, NC house has been on the market for a while and it just pains me to no end that I can’t buy it myself. Want to know how much it is? All 2,195 square feet of it, with those stained glass windows and beautiful woodwork details? Just $192,500. Sounds cheap? As long as you can afford to fix it up—yes, Durham is a great place to buy a house.

The McCracken-Mize house was built in 1902, and has been a family home in addition to a “demonstration project intended to inspire other residents of older homes,” a homeless shelter, and office space. A local newspaper, The Herald-Sun, wrote an article about the house and you can read more about its history here. (Side note on the Herald Sun article: after visiting the house, I take issue with the “it needs new everything inside” line. But then again I tend to see old dilapidated houses through rose tinted glasses…).

The house has gorgeous tall ceilings, big rooms, a sweet kitchen, an upstairs with nooks and crannies just perfect for some imaginative kid, huge french doors, and multiple fireplaces. If we owned this house we’d be broker than broke, and yet… I want it so bad it hurts.

These beautiful photos were taken by Jessie Gladin-Kramer and you can see more of them right here.

this week’s recipe: finnish pancakes

September 14th, 2010 · 20 Comments

Let’s keep it simple this week, shall we? Here’s a secret: my husband and I are in the midst of buying our first house (huge grin!) and as if that hasn’t made life crazy enough, my car conked out and will cost me more than this month’s rent (huge tears).

So I could use some comfort food right about now, and these Finnish pancakes from Back to Her Roots are calling my name. Thin pancakes beat thick pancakes any day. It’s true.

Visit Back to Her Roots for the full recipe.
