chomp

November 30th, 2011 · 5 Comments

Chomp is a one lady textile and pattern design shop, created in 2007 by Dana Fehsenfeld during a fellowship at Penland School of Crafts. Dana first takes her hand drawn patterns and turns them into screen printed textiles, which are then turned into one of a kind sewn goods (or sold by the quarter).

Thanks to artist Ele Annand for the tip!

November 25th, 2011 · 4 Comments

This gift guide is all about giving back in style! A portion of the sale on each of these items benefits charity, so you can feel good about spending your money on this Black Friday, and have a story to share along with each holiday gift.

2. Buy one pair of sunglasses and TOMS will help give sight to a person in need through their One for One program
3. With each sale of a FIGS tie (cashmere scarf tie shown here), one school uniform is purchased for an underprivileged child
4. Etsy seller Sieben Morgen will donate 20% of the sale of each crane stamp to Kindernothilfe, a charity fund which supports children in need all over the world

10. Designer Christine Valenti donates a portion of all sales, including this leather pouch, to charity
11. This magazine basket is handwoven by artisans in the Philippines through Community Crafts Association of the Philippines, an organization committed to the development and empowerment of artisans.
12. Laszlito Kovacs print, for sale on The Working Proof, a company which seeks to promote art and social responsibility, and gives 15% of the sale of each print to a charity of the artist’s choice

Above are some favorites from my own collection (which I refer to often), in addition to a few I wish would appear under my tree. Photographs and book descriptions provided by their respective publishers.

By Hand features the work of thirty-two artists whose innovative and unexpected uses of handicraft techniques such as embroidery, sewing, knitting, and crocheting are making the age-old craft versus art debate obsolete. From Kiki Smith’s lovingly etched birds, to Barb Hunt’s knitted land mines to dynamo-ville’s one-of-a-kind puppets, to Evil Twin’s handstitched publications, the artworks in By Hand revel in the care and consideration of craft.

Vera: The Art and Life of an Icon
…An innovator and one of the most successful female entrepreneurs of her time, Vera built her company on a radical philosophy: fine art should be accessible to everyone, not just a select few. Pulled: A Catalog of Screen Printing
