In the Kitchen: FoodieCrush

Heidi, from FoodieCrush, may be best known for her online magazine that rivals national publications. And for her perfectly set type atop her beautifully styled shots. But behind the scenes, Heidi is a friend to many. Incredibly talented while so down to earth. Heidi, I have a foodie crush on you.

What is your best memory in the kitchen (current or past)?
The kitchen conjures up so many images with holiday memories always at the top of the list. My sister and I could never sleep when Santa could potentially be sliding down our chimney as we laid awake in our beds. So to allow my parents a little extra time to sleep, but put our hyperactive minds to work, my mom assigned us the task of preparing and baking all of the blueberry muffins if we couldn’t sleep. So there we were, cracking open boxes of Krusteaz muffin mix, draining cans of berries and biting into hot muffins at 5 a.m. Christmas morn while the rest of the house slept. Every time I smell a blueberry muffin I still think of Christmas.
Whats the best thing about your kitchen?
The best thing about my kitchen is its my favorite spot to spend time with my husband and daughter. Before we had Smudge, my husband and I would go to the grocery store every single night, choosing fresh fish, veggies, whatever struck us, and would go home and create gourmet meals. Yes we ate at 10 p.m., but it was such a bonding experience and really cemented our relationship with quality time together. Now we share that with Smudge, and she is becoming an amazingly enthusiastic helper in the kitchen. And her scrambled eggs are the best of the family’s.
What is your favorite meal to prepare?
Do you really expect me to narrow that one down? Ugh! We love having friends over, especially in the summertime when we dine on our deck that looks up to the peaks of Mount Olympus in our front yard and the Salt Lake valley from the back. We’ll either grill up or one of my favorite stand-bys is Thai Basil Chicken. The other meal I like to prepare most is Chocolate Chip Banana Pancakes for my Smudge. It’s her number one request and for that I’m happy to oblige.
What does your dream kitchen look like?
My dream kitchen is pretty much my kitchen now, but only if I had a more open space for people to congregate. We have a fireplace that divides the kitchen from the living area which we didn’t want to move when we remodeled, so it’s sort of a divider. But we like to make and renovate, so you never know where our next kitchen might be.
What 3 guests would you like to have around your dinner table?
If I may, I’d like to count couples as one guest: my mom and dad, my husband’s mom and his dad—who passed away 9 years ago—and our daughter Smudge. That to me is an ideal ‘milliion dollar diinner’ as my mom often calls our dining occasions.
