In the Kitchen: The First Mess

Today we’re in the kitchen with Laura of The First Mess. One of my favorite things about Laura is that her kitchen extends far beyond the confines of four walls. Her kitchen is luscious, spacious, painted in natural colors, with the slightest smell of fresh dirt. I secretly want to move to Canada just so that I can be her neighbor.

What is your best memory in the kitchen (current or past)?
Whenever I’m cooking for friends or people who just really love food. That’s a gift and a happy memory every time.

Whats the best thing about your kitchen?
It’s steps away from a big garden with raspberry bushes, apple and plum trees, and so many vegetables and wild things. Just beyond that, there’s a peach orchard and vineyards for miles. Inspiration and a fine tipple is always within reach.

What is your favorite meal to prepare?
Either homemade pasta or a good kale salad because there always seems to be some poking out of the dirt, whatever the season. It’s lovely to massage the leaves and serve up something so deeply nourishing. This recipe is one of my favorites.

What does your dream kitchen look like?
It would be outside with a wood-fired oven, a charcoal grill, a huge harvest table with benches, a sweet stereo, maybe a fire pit, and probably just a hose for running water… I’m basically working towards full time outdoor living at this point.
