A couple weeks ago I shared one of Ashlae’s recipes. From her beautiful pictures, to her unique drool-worthy recipes, to her witty writing, you’ll be hooked on Oh Ladycakes in no time (if you’re not already). She also lives in Denver, a city I hope to call home one day. We were destined to be friends.
What is your best memory in the kitchen (current or past)?
As a small child, I spent a lot of time baking alongside my Great Oma in her tiny kitchen. My favorite memory is stirring the oats into her delicious oatmeal raisin cookies, and testing the dough before we spooned it onto the baking sheets. I have a photo of her hanging in my kitchen, and I like to think that now she’s the one baking alongside me.
Whats the best thing about your kitchen?
At first I thought it was tacky, but I’ve grown to love the open concept shelving. It’s one of the first things people see when they walk into our loft, and they always have something to say about the eclectic mix of dishes. Or the fact that I own three too many sets of mixing bowls.
What is your favorite meal to prepare?
It probably sounds like a snoozefest to most, but I love making big ass salads. I throw chopped mixed greens into large mixing bowls and top them with every vegetable in our refrigerator, toasted walnuts (or almonds), nutritional yeast, and a good drizzle of poppyseed dressing. After years of salad making, I finally learned the trick to a good salad is to chop every single ingredient.
What does your dream kitchen look like?
It’s bright, has open-concept vertical storage, and everything is within arm’s reach. There are subway tiles, concrete countertops, and a big farm sink. Oh, and there’s a butcher block for Thom and double ovens for me.
What 3 guests would you like to have around your dinner table?
Bill Maher for his hilarious and inappropriate commentary, Elon Musk so I can talk him into taking me to Mars, and Emily Haines so she can sing us all into a food coma after dinner.
