Days seem to be flying by lately. Now that I’m down to the last couple months in my pregnancy, there seems to always be some kind of doctors appointment or baby-related to-do list item that needs checking off, and of course work and keeping up with the house is keeping my husband and me busy as well. Today I’m cleaning up my Golden Belt studio for tonight’s 3rd Friday open house (stop by, if you’re local! I’ll be around from 6:30-8:30).

Mark Warren and Chris Pence met and became friends in high school. After high school Mark went to college for sculpture and religious studies, but unable to see a practical application for his newly acquired knowledge of art theory and criticism he attended the Penland School of Crafts as a Core Fellow. During his time at Penland, he was able to learn from and work for the grandfather of American studio slip-casting Tom Spleth.
Chris’s path began in clay but he struggled to find a way to make a living. Chris went to business school and then pursued a master’s degree in accounting. He cut his teeth in the business world as a CPA at a large accounting firm, but after three long years in the fast paced, high stress world of public accounting he decided to return to his original love of clay.
In 2011 Mark and Chris decided to use their skills to start a company. Their mission is to create well-designed, high quality home-wares, with a focus on minimal, comfortable, elegant objects for everday use. Haand is located in the rural piedmont of North Carolina, in a farmhouse on 40 acres of land. They see the entire process through from conception to completed product, working to make objects that create a meaningful and lasting interaction between user and object.
One of Haand’s up-and-coming projects is a collaboration with artist Leigh Suggs to produce a series of wall tiles, which will be displayed in Chapel Hill, NC. The final piece will be around 200 pieces and cover about 18 square feet — a modern geometric statement piece.
