Jazmin Wool Fan Stitch Scarf Pattern

Special Features:

  • Lightweight and breathable fan stitch design
  • Uses simple stitches repeated in a rhythmic pattern
  • Gorgeous color possibilities using Jazmin wool’s multiple shades
  • Finishing twig details add a romantic and unique touch
  • Great for scarves, shawls, or lightweight wraps

Skill Level: Beginner – Intermediate
Materials:

  • Katia Jazmin yarn (or similar 50% acrylic blend, 150g/420m)
  • Crochet hook size 4 mm (or recommended size for yarn)
  • Yarn needle for finishing
  • Scissors, measuring tape

Step 1: Materials Preparation

  • Use two balls of Katia Jazmin yarn or sufficient yarn of choice. With two balls, you can make a long scarf or a small blanket.
  • Use a 4 mm crochet hook as recommended.
  • Gather yarn needle, scissors, and measuring tape.

Step 2: Start Foundation Chain and First Round

  1. Make a slip knot leaving enough tail to weave later.
  2. Chain 4.
  3. Make a slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring.
  4. Chain 3 (counts as first dc).
  5. Make 5 dc stitches inside the ring, totaling 6 dc (including ch3) — this forms your first fan cluster.

Turn your work.

Step 3: Second Round – Form Chain Loops and Fans

  1. Chain 3 (counts as first dc) plus 5 more chains — you will have an 8-chain loop.
  2. In the third dc from the previous round (counting carefully), make a single crochet.
  3. Chain 5 again, single crochet into the third dc further along.
  4. Repeat chain-5 loops and single crochets along the row to create chain spaces between fans.
  5. At each chain loop, make 5 dc stitches forming a fan.

Turn your work.

Step 4: Third Round – Build on Fan Motifs

  1. Chain 8 at start (ch3 to rise, plus ch5 chain loop).
  2. Single crochet into the 3rd dc of the fan group below.
  3. Chain 5; single crochet into next 3rd dc.
  4. Make a fan of 5 dc in the 3rd chain of the previous chain loops.
  5. End each fan with a single crochet in the 3rd chain of the next loop.
  6. This pattern of fans separated by chain loops and single crochets continues repeating.

Step 5: Subsequent Rounds — Increasing Fans Each Round

  1. Each new round begins by chaining 8, followed by alternating fans and chain loops.
  2. Increase the number of fan groups by adding one extra fan cluster per round, gradually expanding your work horizontally.
  3. Continue the rhythm of 5 dc fans separated by 5-chain loops and joined by single crochet stitches in the correct chain spaces.
  4. Maintain counting of chains and fans carefully to keep the pattern consistent.

Step 6: Finishing Edges with Twig Details

Once the scarf reaches desired size (about 167 cm in length for the sample), finish by adding decorative “twig” or leaf motifs:

  1. Leave a long tail for finishing.
  2. Work a slip knot and chain 10.
  3. Insert your hook in the 4th chain from hook and yarn over to pull a loop (picot start).
  4. Repeat loop pulls 4 times on hook, yarn over and pull through to form a gathered picot.
  5. Chain 3 and slip stitch to base to form twig.
  6. Attach these twig leaves along scarf edge by slip stitching into the base fabric at regular intervals, forming a pretty leafy border.

Step 7: Final Assembly

  1. Weave in all tails and ends securely with a yarn needle.
  2. Ensure all twigs are firmly attached and spaced evenly.
  3. Light blocking or steaming can help your scarf lie smooth and show the textured fan stitch clearly.

Size & Yarn Use

  • Finished scarf length in example: 167 cm without stretching.
  • Used approximately 1 ball plus a little of the second ball of Jazmin yarn.
  • Width is adjustable by changing initial number of chains and rounds.
  • Yarn can be substituted with other cotton or wool blends.

Tutor's Tips

  • Keep stitch tension even to maintain the fan shapes well.
  • When counting chains and fans, mark your stitch spaces to avoid mistakes.
  • For bigger scarves, continue adding fans and chain loops symmetrically each round.
  • The twig edging is optional but adds a charming finish.

Conclusion

Your completed fan stitch scarf is a stylish and cozy accessory perfect to gift or keep for yourself. Its airy texture and unique edging make it stand out from basic scarves. The pattern is versatile, quick to work up, and customizable in size and color.
