  • Amount: As needed for required measurements (refer to instructions for guidance)
  • Hook: 3 mm crochet hook (recommended by yarn, you may use between 1–3 mm; 3 mm for a more elastic, open fabric)

    • Stitch markers (or substitute with hair clips)

Key Abbreviations (US Terminology)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • yo – yarn over
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • rep – repeat

Special Notes

  • Construction: The top is worked in rounds from the body upper edge (above the arms), using foundation dc for enhanced elasticity.
  • Fit: Adjust number of foundation sts and armhole chs to suit your measurements.
  • Markers: Use stitch markers to perfectly divide front, back, and armholes.
  • Gauge: Not specified; follow measurement instructions for a custom fit.
  • Stitch Count Example: The sample uses 172 sts total, split evenly for front and back (86 sts each), and 17 sts per armhole section.

Pattern Instructions

1. Body Upper Edge (Foundation Round)

  1. Measurement:

    • Use measuring tape to measure around your upper body (above arms) for desired width. This is your chain length.
  2. Foundation Stitch:

    • Begin with a slip knot.
    • Using the foundation double crochet (fdc), create the required number of foundation dc stitches to match your measured length (e.g., 171 fdc).
    • (fdc tutorial: ch 3, yo, insert hook into first ch, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through first loop (foundation ch), yo and pull through 2, yo and pull through last 2. Next: yo, insert hook into the base ch of the last fdc, continue as above.)
    • Add 1 additional fdc to round off the total (sample: 172 fdc).
  3. Join Round:

    • Straighten your foundation row.
    • Insert hook into the first foundation st, yo, pull up loop, pull through, join with a sl st to form a round.
  4. Place Marker:

    • Place a stitch marker at the joining point.

2. Body (Rounds 2–18): Double Crochet Rounds

  1. Round 2:

    • Ch 2 (counts as first dc).
    • dc in each st around.
    • Join with a sl st to the first non-ch dc.
    • Place marker at joining point.
  2. Rounds 3–18 (or until desired upper body height):

    • Rep Round 2.
    • Sample top is 18 rounds (~12 cm high).

3. Dividing the Body for Armholes

  1. Preparation:

    • Determine number of sts for front and back (sample: 172 total; 86 front, 86 back).
    • Use markers to divide at the sides (sample: place marker at st 17 from each side for armholes).
  2. Creating Armholes (Next Round):

    • Body:

      • Ch 1.
      • Turn.
      • hdc in each st to the first armhole marker.
    • Armhole Chains:

      • Ch number of sts for desired armhole width (sample: 15 ch).
      • Turn.
      • Skip one st, hdc in next st after marker.
      • Continue in hdc to the second side marker.
      • Rep armhole chs as for first side; join to next st after marker.
      • Continue hdc to end of round.

4. Armhole and Body Extension (Rounds 2+): Half Double Crochet Rounds

  1. Next Round:

    • Ch 1, turn.
    • hdc in each st around including into each armhole chain.
    • Join with sl st.
  2. Continue in Rounds:

    • Rep hdc rounds for desired length of body.
    • Sample uses 55 rounds after armhole division (~25 cm).

Pattern Correction & Tips

  • Foundation Row Correction: If you do not know foundation dc, you can start with ch and dc into chs, but elasticity will be less.
  • Fit Tip: Adjust armhole chains to your preferred fit (wider/narrower).
  • Edge Finish: Optionally, finish bottom edge with a round of sc for neatness.
  • Seamless Join: Make sure not to twist the foundation when joining in the round.
  • Marker Placement: Consistent use of stitch markers aids symmetry and prevents mistakes.

Conclusion

This pattern provides a seamless, stretchy crochet top, suitable for intermediate to advanced crocheters. The use of foundation double crochet and stitch markers results in a well-fitted, comfortable garment. Adapt stitch counts, rounds, and lengths as needed for your own size and preferences.

If you encounter any difficulties or have questions, feel free to ask for clarification!

Tips

  • Try the top onto your body at each major stage, to ensure proper fit.
  • If you’re new to foundation stitches, practice on scrap yarn before starting.
  • Use a slightly larger hook if you want your top airier and more elastic.
