Fingerless Crochet Gloves – Step-by-Step Pattern

Materials

  • Batik yarn (leftover from turban hat or any soft medium-weight yarn)
  • Crochet hook size 4 mm
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • blsc = single crochet into back loop only

Pattern Instructions

Wristband Base

Row 1:

  • Ch 12 (or desired width for your wrist). This forms the base width of your glove.
  • Work 1 sc in the second ch from hook and in each ch across (total 11 sc).
  • Turn.

Row 2:

  • Ch 1, work 11 sc in the back loops only (blsc) across.
  • Turn.

Repeat Row 2 until the wristband reaches about 14 cm (approximately 12 “little hills” made by blsc rows). Keep the tension relaxed so it won’t be too tight.

Joining the Wristband

  • Fold the wristband with the right sides facing each other (the blsc ridges on the outside).
  • Use a yarn needle or your hook to sew the sides together with a whip stitch or mattress stitch, creating a seam that is almost invisible.
  • Turn right side out.

Glove Body and Finger Openings

Row 1:

  • Attach yarn at seam.
  • Ch 1, sc across the seam join to stabilize.
  • Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc, ch 2, 2 dc into the same stitch to form a fan. (This fan pattern will form the decorative 'fans' around the glove.)
  • Work 10 fans (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc each) evenly spaced around the glove, separated by 2 ch stitches.
  • Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3.

Row 2 and onwards:

  • Follow the same fan pattern (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) on each fan space, separated by ch 2.
  • Place 5 fans on the front part of the hand and 5 on the back, leaving space for the thumb opening.

Thumb Opening

  • At the thumb area, separate 2 fans to create space.
  • Close the thumb gap by joining stitches beyond the gap with a tight sl st and single crochet to hold the opening.
  • Continue the fan pattern around remaining parts of the glove.

Finishing the Glove

  • Work 4 rows of fan stitches to complete the hand part.
  • Bind off loosely, fasten ends, and weave in all tails.

Special Features

  • Back loop single crochet ribbing gives a stretchy cuff that fits comfortably.
  • Decorative fan stitch pattern adds elegance and texture.
  • Thumb opening allows freedom of movement while keeping the hand warm.
  • Uses leftover yarn to create matching sets with other projects like turban hats.

Difficulty Level

Intermediate – Requires knowledge of basic crochet stitches, working in back loops, joining edges, and creating fan stitch patterns.

Tutor’s Suggestions

  • Keep your foundation chain and wristband loose for comfortable fit.
  • Use stitch markers to mark thumb space and fan repeat points.
  • Measure your hand and wrist as you go to customize size.
  • Practice fan stitch on small swatch before starting glove body.

Uses

  • Stylish accessory for chilly weather
  • Functional gloves for typing or using touchscreen devices
  • Great handmade gift matched with hats or scarves

Tip

When sewing the wristband seam, avoid pulling too tight so the cuff retains its desired stretchiness. Also, blocking your finished gloves can help shape and soften the fibers for added comfort.

Conclusion

These fingerless gloves combine cozy functionality with charming style. Using simple stitches and elegant details, they’re a fun intermediate project suitable for yourself or for gifting. Paired with matching accessories, these gloves will keep your hands warm and your look fashionable all season long.
