Crochet Pattern: Christmas Tree Ornament

This Christmas Tree Ornament is a festive crochet project that adds a handmade touch to your holiday decor. The ornament features a star-shaped top, a beautifully textured tree body, and a simple, rooted stem. Perfect as a hanging ornament, this design works especially well as a cheerful addition to your Christmas tree or holiday displays.

Skill Level

Intermediate – This pattern utilizes essential crochet stitches combined with some intermediate techniques, such as working in rounds, creating star-like points, increasing/decreasing, and shaping using joined double crochet stitches. It is suitable for those with experience handling multiple stitch types and working in rounds.

Materials

  • Yarn: 1–2 mm polyester cord (or any yarn of similar diameter), preferably in green color for the tree, and optional brown for the tree stem.
  • Crochet Hook: Size 2.5 mm for tight and defined stitches.
  • Additional Tools:
    • Scissors.
    • Yarn needle for weaving ends.
    • Steam iron for blocking (optional, but recommended).

Stitch Abbreviations

  • Ch: Chain
  • Sl St: Slip Stitch
  • SC: Single Crochet
  • DC: Double Crochet
  • Tr: Triple Crochet (yarn over 3 times before inserting your hook).

Special Stitches

Magic Ring (MR):

A method to start your work in the round while allowing you to pull the ring tightly closed.

  1. Create a loop with the yarn, ensuring the working yarn crosses over the tail end.
  2. Hold the loop securely with your thumb and fingers.
  3. Insert the hook into the loop, yarn over, and pull the loop back to create a chain. Work your first stitches into the ring.
  4. Once the stitches are complete, pull the tail end tightly to close the loop.

Joined Double Crochet Stitches:

Creates a cluster of 3 DCs worked together into a single stitch.

  1. Yarn over and insert the hook into the stitch/space.
  2. Yarn over again, pull up a loop, and yarn over to pull through only the first two loops (you’ll have 2 loops remaining).
  3. Repeat this process two more times in the same space, leaving an extra loop on the hook each time.
  4. Once you have 4 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all loops to complete the cluster.

Useful Tips

  1. Tension Management: Keep consistent tension when working with polyester cord to prevent uneven stitches.
  2. Markers: Use a stitch marker or contrasting thread to mark the beginning of rounds when working the star base.
  3. Blocking: For a polished finish, block the completed ornament to ensure the tree stays flat and symmetrical.
  4. Variants: Add a small decorative bead or bell at the tip for added charm.

Pattern Instructions

This ornament includes three key sections: the star top, the triangular Christmas tree body, and the tree stem, with finishing touches for a polished appearance.

1. Base Ring & Star Points (Top of the Tree)

The star or top of the tree is worked first.

Round 1: Base Ring

  • Begin with a magic ring (MR).
  • Work 7 SC into the MR.
  • Pull the tail tightly to close the ring, and join with a Sl St to the first SC. (7 stitches)How To Crochet New Year's Decor. Christmas Tree 3

Round 2: Star Points

  • Create 5 star points:
    • Chain 5, insert the hook into the next SC, and work 1 SC to anchor the point.
    • Repeat the sequence 5 times (i.e., 5 star points).

2. Initial Tree Body & Pattern Foundation

This section forms the base for the rows of the triangular tree. Switch to green yarn for this section.

Row 1:

  • In the last stitch of the star’s base, work:
    • 3 DC joined together (leave last loop of each DC on the hook, then YO and pull through all loops to close).
    • Ch 3.
    • Work another 3 DC joined together into the same stitch/space.
  • This creates a small cluster and foundation for the tree. How To Crochet New Year's Decor. Christmas Tree 5

3. Tree Rows

This step develops the tree's triangular body as the rows progress.

Row 2:

  • Ch 4, turn your work.
  • In the open loop space, work: 3 DC joined together, Ch 3, and another 3 DC joined together into the same space.
  • Complete the row by working a Tr St into the top chain of the starting chain from the previous row.How To Crochet New Year's Decor. Christmas Tree 6

Row 3:

  • Ch 4, turn your work.
  • Expand into the second row by working 1 SC, then add a set of 3 DC (together), Ch 3, 3 DC (together) in the next loop space.
  • Continue this expansion by alternating SC stitches and the motif.

Rows 4–9:

With each new row, the number of motifs (tree elements) will increase:

  • Row 4: Work 3 motifs across the row.
  • Row 5: Work 4 motifs, with 1 SC between each motif.
  • Row 6: Work 5 motifs.
  • Continue increasing the number of motifs in each row by adding 1 SC + motif per row, creating a wider tree.

Row 10 (Final Row):

  • Work across all stitches, maintaining the established pattern.
  • Finish the row with a Tr St into the final stitch or chain for symmetry.

4. Tree Stem

This small section grounds the ornament and provides a complete look.

Step 1:

  • Using Sl St, move to the central 5 stitches of the bottom row of the tree.
  • Chain 3.

Step 2:

  • In the next stitch, work 4 SC stitches across the selected center stitches. (5 SC in total)
  • Turn your work for the next row.

Step 3:

  • Work one additional row of 5 SC stitches directly above the last row.
  • Cut the yarn, leaving a tail to weave in securely. How To Crochet New Year's Decor. Christmas Tree 7

5. Finishing

  • Weave in Ends: Use a yarn needle to weave in the loose ends horizontally hidden into adjacent stitches.
  • Blocking: Place the ornament on a flat surface, cover it with a thin cotton cloth, and gently press with a steam iron. This enhances the tree’s shape and texture. If using polyester cord, make sure the iron does not come into direct contact with the cord to avoid damage.

Conclusion

This Christmas Tree Ornament is a charming addition to your holiday decor. With its star top, intricate tree design, and final embellishments, it brings festive cheer to your home or gifts. Experiment with colors and yarn textures to create unique ornaments to fit your seasonal style. This lightweight and elegant piece is a delightful way to showcase your crochet skills.
