Textured Puff Stitch Crochet Pattern

Versatile and visually appealing, this easy puff stitch pattern is ideal for creating blankets, scarves, or wearable garments that require both warmth and style. The design is based on rows that alternate between simple single crochets and a striking combination of double crochets and gentle, two-loop puff stitches. The alternating structure creates a beautiful textured surface on the front side, while maintaining a flatter, smooth reverse. Using only foundational stitches, the pattern is approachable for adventurous beginners as well as more experienced crafters seeking a project with pleasing dimension and tactile richness.

Pattern Basic Points

Features of the Stitch

  • Alternating rows create an appealing relief texture.
  • The pattern consists of single crochet and alternating double crochet with puff stitch rows.
  • The pattern repeat is just two rows, making it easy to memorize.
  • Suitable for a wide range of projects: baby blankets, throws, jackets, sweaters, and more.

Principles

  • Uses basic stitches with only one special modification (the 2-loop puff).
  • Repeatable for any desired length or width.
  • Grows quickly due to taller double crochet rows.

Applications

  • The pattern’s texture gives a plush feel ideal for home textiles.Delicate and easy Turkish stitch!!! Ideal for blankets and garments (2)
  • The smoothness on the reverse makes it comfortable for garments worn against the skin.

Special Notes

  • Start with an even number of chains to accommodate the alternating sequence.
  • Always finish puff/double crochet rows with a double crochet in the last stitch (the turning chain), to keep edges straight.
  • While gauge is not critical, matching the sample’s evenness gives the best look.
  • Use a consistent tension for uniform puff stitch height.
  • For extra definition in the puff stitch, use a loftier wool yarn.

Skill Level

Beginner to Intermediate – The pattern is accessible for a confident beginner comfortable with single crochet and double crochet. The puff stitch is simple but may require a little practice for absolute beginners. Intermediate crocheters will find the rhythm satisfying and meditative.

Materials

  • Crochet Hook: Size 3mm
  • Yarn: Semi-thick, natural merino wool or similar weight
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Measurements / Sizing

  • The width is determined by the starting chain (any multiple of 2).
  • Length can be as long as desired; simply repeat the main pattern rows.
  • Sample swatch: 24 starting chains (~12 cm wide, size may vary based on yarn and tension).

Gauge

  • Gauge is not crucial unless for a fitted garment.
  • Sample for pattern: 24 ch = ~12 cm wide after Row 1
  • 4 rows (Row 1-4) = ~3 cm high
  • Test your personal tension if a specific finished size is necessary.

Stitch Pattern: Alternates rows of single crochet with rows of (double crochet, 2-loop puff st) pattern.

Stitch Abbreviations

  • ch — chain
  • sc — single crochet
  • dc — double crochet
  • st(s) — stitch(es)
  • yo — yarn over
  • puff — 2-loop puff stitch (see special stitches)
  • sp — space
  • tch — turning chain

Special Stitches

  • 2-Loop Puff Stitch (Puff):
    1. Yarn over, insert hook around the post of the dc from the previous row, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
    2. Yarn over, insert around the same post, yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
    3. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on the hook.
    4. Secure with a chain if desired for extra firmness.

This puff stitch is worked “around the back” of the previous row’s double crochet post.

Detailed Pattern with Rounds

Foundation Chain

  • Chain a multiple of 2 (for example, 24 chains for the sample shown).

Row 1: Foundation Row

  • Start in the 2nd chain from the hook:
    • Work 1 sc into each chain stitch across.
    • (You will have one less stitch than your original chain count. For 24 chains, you should have 23 sc.)Delicate and easy Turkish stitch!!! Ideal for blankets and garments (3)
  • Turn your work.

Row 2

  • ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn.
  • dc in every sc across the row.Delicate and easy Turkish stitch!!! Ideal for blankets and garments (4)
  • (You now have a straight row of double crochets.)

Row 3

  • ch 3, turn.
  • dc in the first available space.
  • Alternate across the row as follows:
    • (dc, puff, dc, puff, ...),
      • where each dc is worked into the next stitch,
      • and each puff is worked around the post of the previous row’s dc (not in the stitch, but around the stitch’s post, from the back).
  • At the end of the row:
    • Finish with a dc in the top of the turning chain from the previous row.Delicate and easy Turkish stitch!!! Ideal for blankets and garments (5)

Row 4

  • ch 1, turn.
  • sc in each st across the row.
  • (This row smooths the puffs and stabilizes the piece.)

Row 5

  • ch 3, turn.
  • Start with dc in first st.
  • Alternate as before:
    • If the previous row had a dc, work a puff here.
    • If the previous row had a puff, work a dc here.
  • Continue alternating dc and puff across the row, ending with a dc in the turning chain.

Rows 6 and Beyond

  • Repeat Row 4 and Row 5 until your fabric reaches the desired length, always following the sc row with an alternating dc/puff stitch row.Delicate and easy Turkish stitch!!! Ideal for blankets and garments (6)

Assembly

No assembly is required unless you are making a project composed of blocks or panels. For blankets or large items, you may wish to edge or border your work with single crochet or other decorative stitches. Otherwise, finish by securely weaving in all yarn ends with a yarn needle.

Conclusion

This stitch pattern provides both visual depth and a soft, cozy hand—a result of the raised puff elements and gentle double crochet fabric. The repeat is easy to memorize and adapts well to various yarn weights, making it a go-to choice for everything from baby blankets to elegant wraps. The blend of single crochet, double crochet, and puff texture yields a fabric with good structure, gentle elasticity, and appealing warmth. Adjust the foundation row or overall length to suit your project, and explore different yarns for varied textures and looks. This pattern offers a touch of sophistication and comfort to any creation.
