Skill Level

Beginner to Intermediate – Requires knowledge of chain stitch, double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), fan stitch (clusters), slip stitch, and basic shaping techniques.

Step-by-Step Pattern

1. Choose Your Size and Chain Foundation

  • Size S: Chain 16
  • Size M: Chain 18
  • Size L: Chain 20
  • Size XL: Chain 22
Note: Chain count affects the width of the cups.

2. Row 1: Foundation Double Crochet and Fan Stitch

  • Starting in 4th chain from the hook, work 1 double crochet (dc) in each chain stitch across.
  • At the last chain stitch (the first one made), work a fan: 2 dc, chain 1, 2 dc all into the same stitch to create a loop for the curve.
  • Tie off yarn.

3. Row 2: Work on One Side of the Chain with Double Crochet

  • Reattach yarn at the base of fan loop.
  • Work 1 dc in each chain loop along the side until reaching the chain 3 start from Row 1.
  • Finish by making the last dc inside the chain 3 space to close the edge smoothly.

4. Rows 3 to 4: Continue Alternating Double Crochet and Fan Loops

  • Chain 3 (counts as first dc), turn work.
  • Continue working dc in each dc stitch along, adding a fan (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) inside the chain loops at fan positions from previous rows.
  • Work 4 rows total to build the cup shape, maintaining fan loops at chain spaces.

5. Repeat Steps 1–4 to Make the Second Cup

  • Complete the second cup exactly the same as the first one.

6. Join the Two Cups and Begin the Front Corset V Shape

  • Join yarn at bottom chain loops on side of one cup.
  • Chain 5, sc in next chain loop of the other cup to connect.
  • Alternate 5 chain stitches and single crochet stitches across the joining bottom loops of both cups.
  • Skip every other loop near the center to create a space for the cowrie shell.

7. Create Decreasing Rows for Corset V Shape

  • Work slip stitches to start next row at base of 5-chains loops.
  • On each row:
    • Slip stitch twice at the start, chain 5, sc in the next loop, repeat until one loop remains.
    • This decreases loops row by row, creating a sharp V point shape in the front corset.

8. Make Side and Back Ties

  • Attach yarn at first chain loop at cup base.
  • Chain:
    • 90 chains for size S (each size increase add 10 chains).
  • Repeat on both sides for ties to wear around the back.

9. Attach Cowrie Shells and Pearls

  • Using sewing thread and needle, attach cowrie shells and pearls at the center V and alternate loops on sides.
  • Sew pearls and cowrie shells securely but loosely enough to dangle freely.
  • Use thread color matching pearls/shells or top color for polish.

10. Finishing Touches

  • Secure all cut yarn ends by weaving carefully.
  • Adjust straps and ties for comfortable wear.
  • Optionally add fabric lining if desired (for modesty).

Tutor’s Suggestions

  • Use thinner or tighter yarn if you want less transparency.
  • Always measure as you go to ensure size fit.
  • Practice fan stitches before starting for smooth results.
  • Customize pearl and shell placement for personal style.
  • Add a small label/tag for a professional touch.

Uses

  • Ideal cropped top for summer beachwear and festivals.
  • Great addition for handmade products’ stores or as a gift.
  • Lightweight and elegant for hot weather layering or standalone wear.

Final Tip

Tip: When joining cups, use a small chain loop as a spacer to prevent seams from puckering and allow comfortable flexibility across the bust line. Consistent tension and counting your chains/stitches on each row is key to a neat and well-fitting top!

Conclusion

This crochet seashell cropped top balances style with practicality, making it a perfect project for both beginners and intermediate crocheters. With its unique fan stitch cups and decorative seashell accents, it’s a beautiful piece ideal for warm seasons, ready to be made in multiple sizes with adaptable details to suit your preferences.
