Tapestry Crochet Heart Stitch for Bags, Wallets, and Rugs

The tapestry crochet heart stitch creates a dense, durable fabric with two colors, forming decorative heart motifs. Its thickness and strength make it ideal for accessories and home items, while its versatility allows for playful color customization and geometric design. By working with both colors simultaneously and alternately carrying the contrast strand, you create a visually rich fabric that is both functional and attractive.

Pattern Basic Points

Structure and Features:

  • Dense, stiff fabric ideal for bags and wallets
  • Heart motifs created by color changes in single crochet rows
  • Not reversible; carried strands are visible on the wrong side
  • Alternating motif rows and plain rows yield crisp patterns
  • Continuous color management without cutting yarn after each motifTHIS TECHNIQUE IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! SO EASY TO DO apestri technique, 2

Special Notes

  • Carry the unused strand slightly above your stitches; do not let it show on the front for a neater appearance.
  • Tighten stitches when carrying the contrast color to ensure it’s well concealed.
  • Heart motif placement can be customized (aligned vertically or staggered for more interest).
  • This technique works with any chain length, but motif placement depends on total stitch count.

Skill Level

Beginner to Intermediate

  • Requires familiarity with single crochet, color changes, and handling two strands.
  • Pattern uses US crochet terminology.

Materials

  • 2 colors of thin thread or yarn (main color, and contrast for hearts)
  • 2 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors

Measurements / Sizing

  • Sample begins with 15 chains for about 7–8 cm (with recommended thread and hook).
  • Adjust initial chain and motif size for desired finished dimensions.

Gauge

  • Gauge is secondary since the stitch is worked for strength and thickness.
  • Approximately: 15 single crochets = 7–8 cm in width using 2 mm hook and 1.5 mm thread.

Stitch Abbreviations

  • ch: Chain
  • sc: Single crochet
  • st(s): Stitch(es)
  • MC: Main color
  • CC: Contrast color

Special Stitches

Color Change Single Crochet (for Heart Motif):
Insert hook in next st, yarn over and pull up loop.
With CC, yarn over and pull up through both loops (complete sc with CC), then drop CC and return to MC for next st.

Carry CC by laying it above your work and crocheting MC stitches over it, so it is incorporated and hidden in the fabric.

    • Example: If hearts were in st 3, 6, 9, 12 in the previous row, position in st 2, 5, 8, 11 for this row.
  • Carry CC strand throughout, switching colors only at motif locations.
  • Remember: Complete each motif sc by switching to CC just before finishing the stitch, then back to MC for following sc.

Row 5: Plain Row

  • Ch 1, turn.
  • All sc with MC, carrying CC inside stitches as before.THIaS TECHNIQUE IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! SO EASY TO DO apestri technique, 8

Row 6 and On: Repeat

  • Continue alternating each row:
    • One row with heart motifs (CC), alternating positions for staggered look.
    • One row plain with MC, always carrying CC inside.
  • Work until fabric reaches desired length.

Assembly

  • Finish last row with plain sc.
  • Cut yarn, weave in all ends.
  • For bags/wallets:
    • Fold fabric, crochet or sew sides together.
    • Add lining if desired.
    • Attach zipper/fastener or chain for a drawstring.
    • If making a rug: continue to desired size and finish edges with sc border.

Conclusion

The tapestry crochet heart stitch is highly suited for robust accessories and decorative home items. The method creates striking colorwork and motifs that are evident on the right side, while the wrong side reveals carried strands—a clear origin of tapestry technique. Customizing chain length, motif placement, and color selection allows for a wide range of uses, ensuring every project is unique and durable. This approach balances texture, structure, and visual interest, making each piece both functional and personalized.
